Design LAB
(Learn And Become)
Design Lab 2013 was held on March 16 and 17, 2013 at Mililani High School. The 2-day workshop is an annual event, founded by AIGA Honolulu to help inspire young artists and designers from high schools around the island. Mililani High School Advisor Todd Yoshizawa has been helping to coordinate the event since its inception, and celebrates 10 years with us this year.
20 or so mentors from the professional design community coached and prodded students from two local high schools. This year’s project was to develop and design a campaign for the fictional agency, Hawai‘i Tourism Group, promoting the hidden treasures of Hawai‘i to visitors.
Mae Ariola, former Art Director of Hawaii Magazine, presented a case study on the magazine during the workshop, talking through her creative process and outcomes. Other mentors gave short lessons on topics like typography, basic composition rules of posters, etc. See photos of the workshop here.
A reception showcasing the students’ work was held at the Box Jelly on April 13th. See photos from the reception here.
We look forward to another great event in 2014. If you’d like to get involved, please contact info@aigahonolulu.org.
