AIGA & Startup Weekend

UPDATE: Great job Wrappily for placing FIRST this weekend! A big congratulations to AIGA members Tiffany Higa and Erica Kunihisa!

ATTENTION AIGA MEMBERS!

Do you feel it is important to educate others in the importance of the role of design?

Perhaps you have an idea that you want to explore, but need the help of a developer and entrepreneur?
Looking to network with others within the community?

Startup Weekend Honolulu an AIGA Honolulu have partnered up to offer all AIGA members a 50% off discount to participate in the first Startup Weekend Honolulu event of 2013. They are looking for talented designers to join their pool of developers, marketers, entrepreneurs and other people within the community.

WAYS TO PARTICIPATE AS A DESIGNER

Unsure of how you can participate as a designer? Here are a few ways some of our members have participated in the past:

Pitch – You are welcomed to pitch an idea, big or small, on Friday evening in front of all the participants. You will only have one minute, so prepare your speech! The crowd will decide on the top ideas that should move forward and if your idea is selected, you will form a team with others to build on your idea.

Join a Team – You don’t need an idea of your own to participate. You will hear a variety of creative ideas, some of which may interest you. As mentioned above, people will be given a chance to vote on the best pitches. After the selected pitches are announced, you may go around and speak to the selected winners and decide for yourself which team to join.

Bring Your Own Team – Know other friends or coworkers that are as excited as you to participate? You are more than welcomed to assemble a team of your peers. Your team leader is not inclined to pitch, but it is strongly recommended so other know who they are competing against. You and your team will watch your product come to life over the weekend and pitch your idea to a panel of judges on Sunday evening.

Watch Only – Still unsure about participating? Not a problem. There is also an option for those of you who want to watch only on Friday during the pitches or Sunday during the judging if you feel you would like to understand more about the event. Although you are not a participant, you will definitely feel the excitement and energy in the air.

WHAT IS STARTUP WEEKEND?

Startup Weekend is an intense 54-hour weekend-long event focusing on building web and mobile application in hopes of creating the next big idea. Their mission is to teach and promote entrepreneurship in our community.

Beginning with open mic pitches on Friday, attendees bring their best ideas and inspire others to join their team. On Saturday and Sunday, teams focus on customer development, validating their ideas, practicing LEAN Startup Methodologies and building a minimal viable product. On Sunday evening, teams demonstrate their prototypes and receive valuable feedback and potential funding from a panel of expert judges consisting of VCs (venture capitalists), angels, and successful entrepreneurs in the community.

Still not satisfied? Here are some testimonials from our AIGA board members:

“Startup Weekend is a great opportunity for designers, print or web, to educate your peers on the importance of design and the proper steps needed to market an idea. Not only are you helping others, but you also get the chance to learn what it takes to run your own business and perhaps move forward with it. I highly suggest this event to anyone!”

– Chris Ota, AIGA Board Member

“Do you thrive on that adrenaline rush during the final stretch when meeting a deadline? Or perhaps enjoy the warm fuzzy feeling you get inside from transforming an idea into something visual?  Then Startup Weekend is for you! You’ll get the unique experience of designing for a startup company, network with business and tech-minded people, AND make forever friends.”

– Tiffany Higa, AIGA Board Member
