TypeEd, the typography education team from LA is coming to Oahu to bring their most popular design session of their three-part type academy program. They will help you defend yourself against the likes of bad design habits by teaching you to rapidly recognize type categories and quickly pair faces to improve readability.
About This Class
The Necessities: Sentences & Paragraphs is an intermediate lecture-demonstration class for the practiced designer or graduating college student who has some working knowledge of typography and understands the basics of setting type in InDesign. You’ll learn:
- The typographic hierarchy approach
- How to handle quotes, dashes and type weights
- InDesign techniques for threading frames, spanning columns, and more
- The ins and outs of choosing and pairing typefaces
- How to implement the process of typographic discipline
This class also serves as a refresher class for seasoned designers and a great training session for companies who want to step up the skills of their employees. Adobe InDesign experience is not necessary, but may be helpful.

About the Instructor
Michael Stinson is a founding partner at design firm Ramp Creative and the studio’s creative director. He is a cofounder of TypeEd, a typography education program dedicated to bringing the craft of typography back to graphic design education, where he leads education program development. Over the course of 18 years in the field of design, his work has been recognized by numerous publications and industry organizations, including Communication Arts, Mohawk Paper Show, TDC, BlackBook, Graphis and The One Show. He is a frequent competition judge and lecturer on the topics of graphic design and typography.
